Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Van Long said inmates nominated for amnesty were reviewed on case-by-case before submitting to the President for approval ahead of the upcoming National Day (September 2, 2022).
Amnesty will be granted to qualified prisoners through a strict, fair and transparent process in accordance with law.
Amnesty is a major policy of the Party and State, manifesting the fine tradition of the nation in strictly punishing law breakers while giving clemency and humanitarian treatment to prisoners who really rehabilitate themselves and wish to return to society as useful citizen.
Under the 2007 Law on Amnesty, Viet Nam has conducted seven amnesties to free 87,000 inmates, including 3,035 last year, on the occasion of major public holidays and important events.
Speaking at the press conference, Deputy Ministe of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc was quoted as saying that 751 foreigners are put in jail in Viet Nam.
Competent agencies will review dossiers and announce who are qualified for amnesty on the occasion./.
