Viet Nam targets to increase life expectancy to 75.5 by 2030

VGP – Viet Nam targets to increase average life expectancy to 75.5 by 2030, according to Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW released by the Politburo on September 9, 2025.

The average life expectancy rose from 45 in 1960s to 74.7 in 2024, more than two years higher than the global average, the National Statistics Office reported.

Life expectancy also varies by region, with areas such as the Central Highlands and northern mountainous regions averaging 72-72.8 years and the southeast, Red River Delta and Mekong Delta having higher lifespans of 75.7-76.5 years.

Vietnamese women live around five years longer than men and their average lifespans were 77.3 and 72.3 years in 2024.

Meanwhile, the average height of children aged between 1 to 18 is expected to increase by 1,5cm by the end of this decade, read the Resolution.

The vaccine coverage rate is projected to reach over 95 percent.

From 2026, people will enjoy free periodic health check-ups at least once a year and have an electronic health record to magage their health over their life cycle and to reduce burden of medical costs. By 2030, people will be exempted from basic hospital fees within the scope of health insurance benefits.

Each commune-level medical stations will have at least 4-5 doctors by 2027. The rate of medical examination and treatment covered by health insurance at commune-level medical stations will be increased to over 20 percent over the next five years.

Health insurance is expected to cover over 90 percent of the population by 2026 and the whole population by 2030.

By 2045, the average life expectancy is projected to reach 80 while the average height of youth is equivalent to that of countries with the same development levels./.
