The information was announced at the 10th session of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions which was held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from June 18-20.
The Southeast Asian nation is currently a member of the inter-governmental committee of the Convention in the 2021-2025 period.
This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention in 2005 that a country has been elected to serve two consecutive terms on the Intergovernmental Committee, which reflects the General Assembly's recognition of Viet Nam's efforts and achievements in implementing the Convention, as well as the country's active contributions and growing credibility within the UNESCO.
Director of the Department of International Cooperation, under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Phuong Hoa affirmed that Viet Nam's policies always place people at the center, aim to build a healthy cultural environment, foster creativity, ensure the cultural rights of the people, and regard culture as one of the pillars of sustainable development.
It is necessary to make greater efforts to ensure that culture has a strong and consistent presence in the global sustainable development agenda, especially as the world moves toward the post-2030 agenda, she noted.
A solemn ceremony was held at UNESCO Headquarters to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The event was seen as highly significant, taking place just ahead of the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development–Mondiacult 2025, scheduled for September in Barcelona.
Notably, during her upcoming official visit to Viet Nam, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay is expected to attend the opening ceremony of the 3rd Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF), one of the events nominated by Viet Nam to be part of the global celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the Convention./.
