Viet Nam commits to promoting and protecting human rights

Congratulating the newly appointed UNHRC President, Ambassador Mai reiterated Viet Nam's close cooperation with the Council.

He noted that Viet Nam successfully completed its fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in September 2024 and is currently formulating a comprehensive plan to implement the accepted recommendations.

In 2025, Viet Nam will conduct dialogues on its national reports regarding the implementation of key international human rights conventions, including the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

Despite various challenges, Viet Nam's economy grew by over 7.09 percent in 2024, while the multidimensional poverty rate declined to 1.9 percent. Healthcare coverage expanded, and the quality of education improved nationwide.

For 2025, Viet Nam targets to accelerate GDP growth to at least 8 percent, laying the foundation for double-digit growth from 2026 onward and creating better conditions for advancing human rights.

The ambassador also emphasized Viet Nam's commitment to climate action, with a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and ensuring a just energy transition.

At the 56th session of the UNHRC in 2024, Viet Nam, alongside Bangladesh and the Philippines, introduced an annual resolution on human rights and climate change, focusing on equitable transition policies.

Reaffirming Viet Nam's proactive role in promoting and safeguarding human rights, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung announced the country's candidacy for re-election to the UNHRC for the 2026-2028 term, with unanimous support from ASEAN member states.

He reiterated Viet Nam's readiness to collaborate with international partners in fostering a constructive and inclusive human rights agenda based on dialogue and cooperation./.
