Vice State President meets with UN chief, CICA Secretary General, Togo leader

At the meeting, Vo conveyed greetings from General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) Central Committee and President To Lam and other senior Vietnamese leaders to the UN chief.

She affirmed that Viet Nam highly values the UN's important contributions to global peace and stability, as well as those of the Secretary-General personally.

Viet Nam supports the UN's central role in maintaining international peace and security and promoting sustainable development on the basis of the UN Charter and international law, she said, adding that Viet Nam strongly backs efforts to reform the UN system to make it more streamlined, effective and responsive.

With the 50th anniversary of Viet Nam-UN relations approaching in 2027, Vo proposed that the two sides soon complete the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2027-2031.

She also affirmed Viet Nam's readiness to facilitate and support the establishment of additional UN offices and organizations in the Southeast Asian country should the UN have such a need.

Briefing Guterres on Viet Nam's development orientations, Vo asked the UN to continue support for the country to develop high-quality human resources, improve access to green finance and accelerate just energy transition.

Such support would contribute to Viet Nam's efforts to sustain double-digit economic growth and achieve its goal of becoming a developed country by 2045, Vo said.

Guterres conveyed his regards to General Secretary and President To Lam and recalled his youth involvement in the international movement opposing the war in Viet Nam.

Congratulating Viet Nam on its impressive socio-economic achievements, the UN chief said the country has consistently been a pioneering partner and a driving force for multilateral cooperation within the UN system, particularly through its substantive contributions to UN peacekeeping operations and the just energy transition.

He affirmed that he would direct UN agencies in Viet Nam to strengthen support for the country's digital transformation and its goal of achieving double-digit economic growth, while helping Viet Nam increase the number of its nationals working at the UN.

Regarding regional and international issues, Guterres said the UN is working to reform the international financial system to better support developing countries.

He also reaffirmed the UN's consistent support for ensuring security, safety and freedom of navigation on the basis of international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
