The above money was calculated by the Institute for Environment and Natural Resources, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), as the Taiwan-based company, for years, discharged untreated sewage into the Thị Vải River.
Đồng Nai, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, and HCMC are the three Southern localities affected by Vedan’s sewage discharge.
Earlier, Vedan tried to repudiate compensation for the peasants who then launched a suit against the case.
Peasants in Đồng Nai Province have not been compensated as they have to wait for official calculation from the Institute for Environment and Natural Resources.
On August 13, Vedan and local government representatives of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu and HCMC will sign the agreement on compensation and the Taiwanese enterprise will transfer 50% of the money in advance for the two localities.
In fact, the peasants gave room for Vedan to exercise its will though the company seriously infringed Việt Nam’s environmental regulations.
As one of the most vulnerable countries to the global climate change, Việt Nam is on way to tighten environment control.
