UNDP helps VN improve social welfare

VGP – A project, sponsored by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), will be carried out to improve social welfare system in Viet Nam.

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) and the UNDP on February 19 launched the project, which will be implemented in the 2013-2016 period.

The project, worth US$2.3 million with a non-refundable aid of US$2 million and the corresponding capital of US$300,000, aims to provide the regular social allowances for around 2.5 million people by 2020.

It is expected to help implement the orientation of Resolution No. 15 on a number of issues relating to social policies for the period 2012-2020.

Social security and welfare systems need to be established based on a new approach and a minimum living standard towards covering the whole population, said Deputy Minister of the MOLISA Nguyen Trong Dam.

UNDP Deputy Country Director Bakhodir Burkhanov confirmed that the project will increase the allowances for vulnerable people, maintain and accelerate poverty reduction process and social development in Viet Nam.
