Two Vietnamese professors elected as academicians of World Academy of Sciences

Professor, Doctor of Science Nguyen The Hoang, former Deputy Director of the 108 Central Military Hospital, and Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice President of Viet Nam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, received their certificates from TWAS President Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim during a ceremony attended by more than 300 scientists worldwide.

The announcement was made at the 17th TWAS General Conference, held from September 29 to October 2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Prof. Nguyen The Hoang, born in 1965 in Ha Tinh province, is the author of more than 100 research papers at home and abroad. His studies focus on circulatory reconstruction, cell culture, and microsurgical techniques for treating congenital limb defects and performing organ transplants.

Meanwhile, Prof. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, born in 1974 in Quang Ngai province, devoted her career to pharmaceutical research, particularly in developing drugs from Vietnamese medicinal plants. She has published over 80 international papers and created products supporting the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers and arthritis. Her team won Ho Chi Minh City's Innovation Award in 2019 for developing bee-derived products, and in 2021 she was honoured with the Kovalevskaia Award for outstanding female scientists in the natural sciences.

With this year's admissions, TWAS now has 1,444 members from over 100 countries. Brazil and China each welcomed 10 new fellows, followed by India with nine, Malaysia with seven, South Africa with four, and Viet Nam, Cuba, Egypt and the United States two each./.
