Viet Nam-China relations have maintained positive momentum and achieved important results in recent years, which have been manifested via high-level exchanges and contacts through various flexible forms.
In particular, General Secretary and President To Lam's state visit to China in recent April was a great success, producing rich, comprehensive and substantive outcomes.
The two sides issued a Joint Statement on further deepening the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and promoting the building of a Viet Nam-China community with a shared future that carries strategic significance at a higher level in the new era.
As many as 32 cooperation documents were signed, covering Party-to-Party relations, public security, justice, economy, production and supply chains, customs cooperation, science and technology, people's livelihood, human resource development, communications and local-level cooperation, among other areas.
Notably, Chairman Zhao Leji paid an official visit to Viet Nam from August 31 to September 2 last year, during which the two top legislators co-chaired the first session of the Cooperation Committee between the two legislative bodies. Exchanges of experience among specialized committees, friendship parliamentary groups and local-level legislatures have also been intensified.
Regarding economic, trade and investment ties, Viet Nam has maintained its position as China's largest trading partner in ASEAN for 10 consecutive years and China's fourth-largest trading partner worldwide for two consecutive years (2024 and 2025). Meanwhile, China has been Viet Nam's largest trading partner for more than 20 consecutive years.
In the first seven months of 2026, China's investment in Viet Nam reached nearly US$3.7 billion, up 31.5 percent year on year. China ranked first in terms of the number of newly registered investment projects, with 849 projects, accounting for around 35 percent of all newly licensed FDI projects in Viet Nam.
The two sides have promoted standard-gauge railway connectivity and piloted smart border-gate models, helping improve customs clearance efficiency, reduce logistics costs and strengthen regional supply-chain linkages.
People-to-people exchanges and cooperation in education, culture and tourism have remained vibrant. The top leaders of the two countries have announced the launch of the Viet Nam-China Tourism Cooperation Year 2026-2027./.
