In a recent interview with VGP, the diplomat noted that the bilateral relationship has been built steadily over the past 50 years, thanks to the sustained efforts of many generations of officials and diplomats on both sides. According to her, the decision in 2024 to elevate the relationship into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership—accepted immediately by Viet Nam—was a strong reflection of the deep trust and warmth that have developed over decades.

As a result, 2025 became a landmark year, marked by high-level visits from New Zealand's Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Speaker of Parliament, and multiple trade delegations, alongside a wide range of cultural, educational, and diplomatic activities. She emphasized that the momentum in bilateral ties is now stronger than ever.

Discussing new opportunities following the upgrade of the bilateral relations, Ambassador Beresford said she was pleasantly surprised by the immediate increase in engagement between the two countries. This, she explained, demonstrated that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is not merely symbolic but carries real substance. One clear example was the first-ever legal dialogue between New Zealand and Viet Nam, where officials exchanged views on multilateral cooperation, the law of the sea, and areas in which the two countries could amplify their voices by working together.

In terms of cooperation between government agencies and businesses, the Ambassador observed a strong willingness on both sides to turn political commitments into practical outcomes.

She noted that New Zealand businesses are highly interested in expanding their presence in Viet Nam, which they view as a dynamic, creative, and increasingly prosperous market with sophisticated consumers.

Addressing the goal of reaching US$3 billion in two-way trade by 2026, the diplomat highlighted the vast potential for growth in sectors such as agri-tech and renewable energy services.

Reflecting on the symbolism of the Year of the Horse in 2026, the Ambassador said the image resonates strongly with the current state of Viet Nam–New Zealand relations. She described the horse as a powerful and poetic symbol of speed, strength, and perseverance—qualities she believes characterize the partnership today.

The Ambassador also noted the cultural significance of horses in New Zealand, particularly in rural life and racing, adding that the symbol reflects Viet Nam's growing role and strong voice in the international arena.

Viet Nam's remarkable development journey over recent decades

Congratulating on Viet Nam’s successful organisation of the 14th National Party Congress, Ambassador Beresford said she found it particularly meaningful to attend both the opening and closing ceremonies.

She expressed strong admiration for the discipline and coherence demonstrated throughout the Congress, noting that the communication of its outcomes was handled effectively not only for the Vietnamese public but also for the international community.

The Ambassador observed that Viet Nam has already made a very strong start in socio-economic development, pointing to the country’s remarkable development journey over recent decades, hailing the nation’s success in lifting large numbers of people out of poverty through strong and consistent leadership.

Looking ahead, she expects the new term to be a period in which Viet Nam unlocks the next level of its potential.

The Congress has articulated clear and ambitious goals, particularly the objective of becoming a high-income country within the next couple of decades, she shared, expressing confidence in Viet Nam’s trajectory, and the country will achieve these targets, bringing greater happiness and well-being to the Vietnamese people.

Strong impression during Tet in Viet Nam

Sharing her impressions of Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, Ambassador Beresford recalled her first experience celebrating the holiday in Viet Nam last year.

Tet in Ha Noi as having a magical and atmospheric quality, with cooler air, longer nights, and a strong sense of togetherness and joy, she described, adding that she was particularly struck by the sight of kumquat trees lining the streets and by learning from her staff how deeply Tet is associated with family reunions.

These values closely align with those in New Zealand, where people also take time during the holiday season to rest, enjoy food and drink, and reconnect with family in preparation for the year ahead, noted the diplomat.

When comparing festival cultures in the two countries, she observed that food plays a central role in both societies. In New Zealand, she explained, preparing and sharing meals is a key expression of family connection, much like in Viet Nam, with people gathering to relax, talk, and enjoy each other's company.

Although the Ambassador has only celebrated Tet once so far, the experience left a strong impression. She recalled spending time exploring the city, visiting historic sites such as the Temple of Literature, and enjoying Vietnamese street food, while acknowledging that she had not yet experienced Tet in the same way as local families. She expressed her hope to become more deeply involved in future celebrations.

In closing, Ambassador Beresford extended her New Year wishes to the Vietnamese people, congratulating Viet Nam on its achievements in 2025 and expressing optimism for even greater success and cooperation in 2026./.
