Public workforce cut helps Viet Nam save over US$1.5 billion each year

VGP - The public workforce has reduced by 145,000 civil servants following the overhaul of political system, which helps Viet Nam to save VND39 billion (US$1.53 billion) in regular expenditures each year, according to a report of the Government.

The number of the Cabinet's ministries and ministerial agencies was reduced to 17 from previously 25 while the number of localities was slashed to 34 from previously 63.

District-level administration system was dissolved and commune-level administrative units were cut from 10,035 to 3,321, equivalent to a 67 percent reduction.

Viet Nam's GDP has expanded from US$346 billion in 2020, ranking 37th globally, to US$510 billion in 2025, up five places to 32nd in the world and fourth in the ASEAN region. Per capita GDP has increased 1.4 times, from US$3,552 to around US$5,000, marking the country's entry into the group of upper middle-income economies.

During 2020–2025 period, budget revenue increased by about VND1.57 quadrillion (US$59.6 billion). Public debt reduced to 35 percent of GDP this year from 44.3 percent in 2020./.
