Project targets wetland protection

VGP - PM Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a project to establish new wetland protected areas and promote capacity building for effective management of protected areas to redce the existing and potential threats in linked landscapes.

The project, "Conservation of Critical Wetland Protected Areas and Linked Landscapes”, is sponsored by the United Nations Development Program’s Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will be in charge of managing the project while the Institute for Strategies and Policies on Natural Resources and Environment, together with the Viet Nam Environment Administration, the People’s Committees of northern Thai Binh province and central Thua Thien-Hue will also be carrying the project.

It looks to build legal frameworks for the conservation of wetlands, establish two new wetland preservation areas, enhance provincial-level capacity in protecting and exploiting wetlands and reduce threats from local livelihoods to biodiversity.

The project also aims to raise public awareness of the value of wetland ecosystem, targeting sustainable management and use of larger linked landscapes.

The project, will be carried out in four years at a total cost of over US$18 million.
