Prime Minister suggests IMO improve Viet Nam’s maritime capacity

At the reception, Pham expressed thanks to the invaluable assistance of the United Nations (UN), including the IMO for Viet Nam over the past years, adding that the Southeast Asian nation is a responsible signatory in implementing international conventions, in general, and international conventions on maritime, in particular.

The Vietnamese Government expects that the IMO would continue to uphold its pioneering role in fostering collaboration between Viet Nam and other member countries in maritime cooperation, said the Vietnamese leader.

With a coastline of over 3,000 kilometers and home to 34 seaports, Viet Nam considers maritime economic  development is among top priorities in its national economic development strategy, noted the Prime Minister.

Viet Nam will continue investment in developing its seaport system to enhance transport capacity and provide post-port logistics services to reduce logistics costs, ensure maritime safety and security, and protect the marine environment, he added.

Besides, the country also focuses on training high-quality human resources to meet the industry's sustainable development in the future, Pham shared.

He called on IMO to assist Viet Nam in building and completing maritime legislation, signing and carrying out international conventions to guarantee maritime safety and security, freedom of navigation and protection of the marine environment.

For his part,  Ki Tack Lim hailed Viet Nam's vision, determination, efforts and measures in realizing its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050.

He suggested Viet Nam strengthen experience exchanges and collaboration with other member countries and IMO in implementing commitments to reducing emissions and developing sustainable maritime industry./.
