This is Prime Minister Pham's first visit to India and the first visit by a Prime Minister of Viet Nam to India over the last 10 years.
Pham is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, Minister-Chairman of the Government Office Tran Van Son, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan, Deputy Minister of National Defense Hoang Xuan Chien among others.
Viet Nam and India established their diplomatic ties in 1972.
The countries elevated their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2016 during the Viet Nam visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the Indian Embassy in Viet Nam, Viet Nam and India have enjoyed long standing trade and economic relations which have steadily grown over a period of time.
The two-way increased to US$14.36 billion in 2023 from roughly US$200 million in 2000. According to Indian data during 2023-2024, bilateral trade reached US$14.82 billion, registering an increase of 0.76 percent year on year.
For India, Viet Nam is the 21st largest trading partner and the 22nd largest export destination globally.
For Viet Nam, India is the 7th largest trading partner, the 7th biggest importer and the 11th biggest import source.
India has 392 active projects with total registered capital of US$1.119 billion, ranking 23rd among 144 countries and territories investing in Viet Nam.
Meanwhile, as of 2022, Viet Nam had six investment projects in India with a total registered capital of US$28.55 million, primarily in the areas of pharmaceuticals, information technology, chemicals and building materials./.
