PM urges VN's fisheries to accelerate

According to the report made by Fisheries Minister Tạ Quang Ngọc, during the cause of renovation, the sector has swiftly shifted to a commodity production with a high economic efficiency. In 2006, the total yield of marine products reached nearly 3.7 million tons, increasing 3.6 times against 1990. Vietnam ranked tenth in the world in exporting marine products. At present, the sector possesses around 100,000 ships and boats, including over 14,000 high-tonnage ones for fishing offshore. The sector also attracts more than 4 million regular workers who has increasingly improved income.

Attending and addressing the ceremony, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng emphasized that, Vietnam must strive to become powerful and rich thanks to the sea as well as protect the country's sovereignty over territorial waters. By 2020, marine economy must contribute 53-55% of GDP, as set in the Vietnam Sea Strategy to 2020. To do so, the sector should overcome all difficulties and challenges, make breakthroughs in exploiting aqua-products and become a major industry which can compete in domestic and international markets.
