Peppercorn exports prices soar

VGP – As many as 56,000 tons of peppercorns were exported in the first four mouths in 2015, worth US$34.081 million, a fall of 25% in volume but a rise of 0.5% in value against last year’s same period, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

In the first four mouths, the country's export prices jumped 34.6% to $9,134 per tons. Pepper exports to the US, Singapore and India during the first quarter accounted for 44.28% of the total volume.

Viet Nam has been the world's largest pepper producer and exporter since 2001, with Germany, India and the US being the biggest buyers.

Though the pepper industry had achieved high growth rates in recent years, the sector should do more to grow in a sustainable manner, the MARD said.

It urged pepper farmers and exporters to adopt measures to raise quality, expand export markets, increase exports of high-quality varieties, step up trade promotion, and improve demand forecast.

Building trademarks for the country's pepper products was also a vital step in developing further, the MARD added.

Currently, Viet Nam’s peppercorn accounted for 30% of the world’s consumption and 50% of the total export turnover in the world.

The US, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and India are the largest peppercorn importers of Viet Nam.
