National biodiversity report released

The report consists of four chapters on biodiversity, fundamental causes of biodiversity degradation, institutional system, policies and resources for biodiversity preservation, trends of variation and upcoming five-year orientations.

The report was made from information and materials provided by prestigious Vietnamese ministries, agencies, localities and scientific and technological research centers and with the participation of leading managers and scientists who are specializing in biodiversity.

The document is expected to assist central and local agencies in planning biodiversity preservation, environmental protection, response to climate change and scientific research.

Within the event, a seminar was held to collect comments for the draft National Strategy on Biodiversity by 2020 with a vision towards 2030.

Viet Nam was recognized as one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world. So far, the country has an adequate legal framework on biodiversity conservation.

Especially, the Law on Biodiversity passed by the National Assembly in 2008 has opened up a turning-point for local communities to partake in preservation of natural resources.

However, Viet Nam’s biodiversity has increasingly declined in both number and quality.

The National Strategy on Biodiversity will be of great significance and form an indispensable part of the National Strategy on Socio-Economic Development to sustainably use biodiversity resources./.
