Landslides kill three in Viet Nam’s northern region

VGP – As of 5pm on October 7, at least three people were killed by landslides induced by heavy rains in Northern Viet Nam, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment reported.

They included one in Cao Bang province and two in Thanh Hoa province, said the ministry.

Meanwhile four people are still missing due to floodwater in Thai Nguyen and Thanh Hoa, the ministry added.

More than 4,800 houses in Cao Bang, Lang Son and Thai Nguyen have been damaged and flooded whole 9.480 hectares of rice and crops have been inundated with floodwater.

Northern provinces like Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, Tuyen Quang, Bac Ninh, Lang Son recorded heavy rainfall of 200-400mm over the past two days.

Heavy rains submerged many of low-lying streets in the capital city of Ha Noi on October 6.

The National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting on Wednesday warned of heavy rains of 300-560 mm in several northern localities such as Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Lang Son, and Ha Noi, leading to swollen rivers and flooding, particularly along the Ca and Thai Binh rivers.

In response to the above situation, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Tuesday requested localities to focused on flood and landslide prevention.

He asked Chairmen of the Provincial People’s Committees of Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Bac Ninh, and Cao Bang provinces to actively coordinate with the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security to promptly organize evacuation of residents away from dangerous areas, deploy measures to protect dykes and to provide necessary support and food to isolated areas.

The Government chief also tasked the local military and police forces to assist the relevant localities in searching for the missing and overcoming the consequences of floods./.
