Immense grief to see off Comrade Võ Văn Kiệt –known as Sáu Dân- to eternal peace
VNGOP –“Today, in a great grief, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Việt Nam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam, the National Assembly, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam,and the Central Committee of the Việt Nam Fatherland Front, together with compatriots, members of the armed forces, friends and family members of the late former PM, are holding this solemn memorial service to bid last farewell to Comrade Kiệt as he goes to rest in eternal peace”, said General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh in an eulogy in the memorial service to Comrade Võ Văn Kiệt at Thống Nhất Meeting Hall, in Hồ Chí Minh City. In front of the Fatherland altar and the national flag-covered coffin, General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh, the board leader of the State-funeral, read with emotions the Eulogy, reviewing the whole life of Comrade Võ Văn Kiệt, which was closely tied with the scarifying and arduous struggle but very heroic, illustrations and glorious one of the Party and People of Việt Nam.
The eulogy is quoted as saying that Comrade Võ Văn Kiệt and the collective of leaders of the Party and the State have been at the helm of the endeavors of Party and the people in undertaking the renovation, known as Đổi Mới in Việt Nam, bringing the nation out of socio-economic crisis, accelerating industrialization, modernization, developing a socialist-oriented market economy, improving people’s livelihoods, enhancing the building of the political system, preserving national defense and security, unceasingly expanding external relations and augmenting the prestige of our country in the international arena.
With a strategic vision, a resolve to carrying out Đổi Mới, a close touch with the masses, a decisive manner and a searching mind, Comrade Võ Văn Kiệt has made a worthy contribution to the planning and organizing of the execution of the Đổi Mới policy initiated and led by the Communist Party of Việt Nam. His name is linked with major works throughout the country.

The coffin of Comrade Võ Văn Kiệt was paraded across different streets in Hồ Chí Minh City to the last destination, the Hồ Chí Minh City Cemetery, within immense grief of people in the city, the entire Vietnamese people and international friends as well.
At No.11 Lê Hồng Phong Street, in Hà Nội, since the early morning, numerous revolutionary veterans, patriotic personalities, intellectuals, representatives from diplomatic corps and international organizations paid tribute to Comrade Võ Văn Kiệt.
Former Deputy PM Đồng Sĩ Nguyên spoke in a choked voice that “resolute, dare to do spirit and sense of responsibility demonstrate Comrade Võ Văn Kiệt’s personal characteristics. He represented one of the most out-standing learners of President Hồ Chí Minh, the most excellent commander, economist and scientist of the Party and Vietnamese people. What Sáu Dân had done so far will remain with the country, the Fatherland and the people.
