Gov't targets to reduce maritime plastic waste by half in next five years

These goals are part of a project on strengthening management of plastic waste in Viet Nam approved by Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh on July 22.

The project also targets to cut maritime plastic waste by 50%.

All tourism sites and hotels will not use non-biodegradable plastic bags and single-use plastic products by 2025.

The project aims to gradually cuts the production and consumption of non-biodegradable plastic bags and single-use plastic products in daily life; while raising awareness among organizations, enterprises and the community about the harmful effects of single-use plastic items to the environment, ecosystem and human health, and encouraging consumers to shift away from single-use and non-biodegradable plastics to eco-friendly alternatives.

It will enable producers and distributors of single-use and non-biodegradable plastic products to shift to eco-friendly equivalents and promote the development and application of advanced technology in plastic waste management and manufacturing of environmentally-friendly products. 

Earlier, the Law on Environmental Protection was passed in November 2020. Decision 1746/QD-TTg on the National Action Plan for maritime plastic waste management until 2030 was issued on December 4, 2019./.
