The meeting drew the participation of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang, who is Chairman of the National Steering Committee for IUU fishing combat, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan, Minister-Chairman of the Government Office Tran Van Son, and leaders of several ministries, agencies and business associations.
Leaders of 28 coastal cities and provinces attended the meeting via virtual format.
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Pham emphasized that leaders of the Party and State attach great importance to combatting IUU fishing through enhancing their leadership, inspection and supervision, accelerating education, improving related legal framework, creating livelihood opportunities for fishermen among others.
Local authorities have actively directed their competent agencies to step up inspection and law enforcement, thereby bringing about positive outcomes, Pham added.
The Government chief, however, said there remain many shortcomings that need to be addressed in the time to come, he said.
He urged the participants to focus on evaluating the situation, analyzing the causes to the shortcomings, and pointing out tasks for the coming time.
Pham requested authorities at all levels to continue serious implementation of the comprehensive measures to put an end to IUU fishing.
