Garments and textiles now top Việt Nam’s export list
For the first ten months of 2009, garment export turnover was estimated at US $7.5 billion, mainly to the US and European markets.

Garment revenue soar was partly attributed to the US Government’s removal of its import supervision mechanism over some of Việt Nam’s export garments at the beginning of this year.

Under the mechanism, since Việt Nam’s admission to  the World Trade Organization in January 2007, the US Department of Commerce checked every six months all import indicators of five categories of textiles and apparels from Việt Nam, namely trousers, shirts, underwear, swimming suits, and sweaters.

However, the Department could not find any evidence in order to investigate whether made-in-Việt Nam garments were dumped in the US or not. Then, the mechanism was finally abrogated.

Việt Nam is now the second biggest garment and textile exporter to the US following China. Its export volume to this market has grown by 20% so far this year, said Mr. Lê Quốc Ân, Chairman of the  Việt Nam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS).

He believed that the sector would fulfill the preset target revenue of US $9.2 billion by the end of this year.
