Of the figure, 1.3 million traveled by air while 177,000 traveled by sea.
South Korea remained the biggest source of visitors to Viet Nam with 420,000 visitors, up 65 percent compared to the same period last year.
Other major tourist source markets included Japan, China, Taiwan, the U.S., Australia, Thailand and India.
Localities with high growth in the number of foreign arrivals were Ha Noi (up 24.4 percent), Ho Chi Minh City (up 22.8 percent), Dong Nai (up 9.1 percent), and Quang Ninh (up 9 percent).
About 12.6 million international tourists visited Viet Nam in 2023, a 3.4-fold rise from 2022, surpassing the initial target of 8 million. The yearly figure, however, is equivalent to 70 percent of the pre-pandemic level in 2019.
For 2024, the country targets to serve about 17-18 million international travelers, and 110 million domestic ones.
In the most ideal condition, if Viet Nam manages to attract 18 million foreign arrivals, the tourism industry could be said to fully recover to the record level of 2019./.
