First Thủ Thiêm Tunnel segment tugged to its position in safety

VGP – The first segment of the Thủ Thiêm under-river tunnel was carried to its position safely at 12.45 PM today in Hồ Chí Minh City.

The first tunnel segment, 92.4 m in length, 33.3m in width, 9.1m in height and 27,000 tons in weight, was tugged by four Thai tugboats 22km along the Sài Gòn River from the casting pool in Nhơn Trạch District (Đồng Nai Province) to its position in Thủ Thiêm, Hồ Chí Minh City.

The segment arrived its destination safely at 12.45 PM. It will be assembled at the depth of 27m within 29 days.

Earlier, the maneuvers were successfully conducted on March 3.

As planned, the second segment will be positioned on April 5-6; the third May 4-5; and the last June 4-5.

The Thủ Thiêm Tunnel is the first under-river tunnel in Việt Nam and the biggest one of its kind in Southeast Asia. It is built by Japanese contractor Obayashi.

The tunnel’s total length is 1,490m. The work consists of two approach segments located in District 1 (585m) and Thủ Thiêm (535m), and an under-river tunnel (370m).
