Coach Chung takes charge of women's team at 2023 World Cup

The Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF) on August 8 extended its contract with the 72-year-old coach until the end of 2023.

Chung's current deal will expire on December 31 and he has several times revealed his retirement plan.

The VFF General Secretary Le Hoai Anh said Chung was considered the most suitable coach for the team who would take part in important competitions next year.

Among these events are the 32^nd SEA Games in Cambodia and the Asian Games in China. The World Cup where Viet Nam will compete for the first time in history will definitely the key one, Anh said.

"My contract with the VFF will be until 2023. We will continue with our plans for 2022 following the current deal," said Chung.

"For the new one, I am happy receiving VFF's trust and understand that it will be a heavy task for me.

"The national team will have a number of events next year. Meanwhile in Southeast Asia, countries have invested strongly in their women's football, creating huge competitiveness. It would not be easy to set the domination in the region," he said.

Chung said he would propose the VFF a long-term programme in which he would focus on young players training plan to make sure sustainable development of women's football.

Chung has accompanied with the national women's football for many years. He has won five SEA Games gold medals in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019 and 2022.

He led the team to the semi-finals of the 2014 Asian Games and 2022 Asian Cup's fifth place.

Under his reign, Viet Nam secured the Southeast Asian tournament trophy in 2019. And he guided the regional champion to the historic 2023 World Cup./.
