Captain arrested for illegally carrying VMS of other fishing vessels

VGP – Police in the southern province of Ca Mau has reported that Truong Van Sang, captain of a fishing vessel, was arrested for illegally carrying the vehicle monitoring system (VMS).

On October 17, the Coast Guard Region 4 Command inspected fishing vessel CM-08710-TS while it was operating about 28 nautical miles from Hon Khoai island and found that there were VMS of other nine fishing vessels.

A fishing vessel with length of 15 meters and above shall be required to install VMS as part of Viet Nam's drastic effort to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, according to the Government's Decree No. Decree No. 37/2024/ND-CP.

Captain of a fishing vessel shall have to ensure smooth VMS connections 24 hour a day with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's data center after leaving fishing port.

A fine from VND300 million to VND700 million shall be imposed on the following acts: Failing to ensure VMS connections and transmitting data to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's data center, uninstalling VMS, removing VSM from the fishing vessel while operating at sea./.
