Canada rolls out red carpet for General Secretary and President To Lam

The Canadian Press ran an article on General Secretary and President To Lam's visit to Canada, highlighting the upgrade of Viet Nam-Canada relations to a Strategic Partnership. The news agency quoted expert Vina Nadjibulla as saying that the two countries "are at a point where the relationship can really go to the next level."

She added that "Viet Nam's direction right now is very similar to what Canada is trying to do, which is to build resilience, diversify partnerships and maximize its own autonomy and role so that it is not squeezed by any great power."

According to Global Affairs Canada, "Viet Nam is an important economic partner in advancing Canada's trade diversification efforts in the region." The Canadian Press also carried positive commentary on the visit.

CBC News highlighted the prospects of the Vietnamese economy, describing Viet Nam as "one of the fastest-growing economies in the world" with a relatively young and well-educated population.

The Philippine Canadian Inquirer, meanwhile, commented on the significance and positive outcomes of the visit.

"Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam has concluded his state visit to Canada, a trip that marks a new chapter in relations between the two countries," the publication wrote. It noted that a major outcome of the visit was the decision by Viet Nam and Canada to elevate their relations to a Strategic Partnership, creating a new framework for deeper cooperation.

An article published by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada highlighted the opportunities arising from the upgraded relationship.

"The September 24 state visit by General Secretary and President To Lam presents Canada with an opportunity to elevate relations with one of the Indo-Pacific region's most important emerging economic and strategic partners; it will mark an important new chapter in bilateral relations," the article said.

Author Bryon Wilfert also shared his observations of Viet Nam's remarkable transformation. He noted that the country, with a population of more than 100 million, has become an increasingly important global manufacturing and supply-chain hub and one of Asia's most dynamic economies.

The author said Viet Nam's geographic position, ASEAN membership, growing economic influence and importance to global supply chains "make the country an increasingly important partner in the Indo-Pacific."

The authors argued that Viet Nam is ready to play a larger role in Canada's Indo-Pacific initiatives and that "Canada should seize this opportunity."

According to author Julie Nguyen, Viet Nam's experience in independence, economic innovation and development provides an important case study of how a middle power can navigate an increasingly complex world.

"For that reason, Canada should view Viet Nam as a priority partner for diversifying trade, deepening engagement with ASEAN and building the strategic resilience needed to navigate great-power competition," she wrote./.
