British, Czech Governments to donate more than 600,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to VN

The UK is sending 415,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Viet Nam as part of the first batch of the 100 million doses to those most in need in the world vaccinated as a matter of urgency, said Raab.

Speaking on the news of the donation, British Ambassador to Viet Nam, Gareth Ward affirmed that the UK is committed to supporting Viet Nam to accelerate its national programme vaccination, as well as make the vaccines accessible to the people most vulnerable to the virus.

These vaccines will soon be handed over to the Vietnamese health authority and distributed to those most in need across Viet Nam, he added.

The British Ambassador underscored that the UK will continue to share experience in vaccine rollout and genomic testing, to ensure Viet Nam’s programme is successful.

The donation is part of nine million COVID-19 vaccines that the UK will begin delivering this week to countries around the world.

This is the first tranche of the 100 million vaccines that Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged the UK would share within the next year at last month’s G7 in Cornwall, with 30 million due to be sent by the end of the year.

At least 80 million of the 100 million doses will go to COVAX, with the rest going to countries directly. The donations follow the pledge that G7 leaders made to vaccinate the world and end the pandemic in 2022.

In addition to this bilateral donation, more doses are reaching Viet Nam through the UN managed COVAX fund, where the UK is taking a leading role, providing over £548 million to supply vaccines globally, including to Viet Nam.

*Earlier on July 26, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis announced an allocation of 250,000 doses to Viet Nam and the shipment will be delivered in the coming time.

Viet Nam has received 14 million vaccine doses from various supply sources, according to the Ministry of Health. As of late July 28, 5,321,839 vaccine doses were administered in Viet Nam, with 496,630 people fully vaccinated./.
